Moving on…

After two memorable years in Hay River, my girlfriend and I have decided it’s time to move on.

Tomorrow morning we leave to begin a cross-country trip to Halifax – our new home. My father recently moved there for work (my mom will join him when the house back home gets sold) and my girlfriend Leanne just got offered a great job there too.

I’m feeling a mix of excitement and sadness as I prepare to leave this town behind. Yesterday was my last day working at The Hub. I’m going to miss being a part of the day-to-day operation of a newspaper for a while. I don’t yet have have a job out east, but I’m hoping to be able to pull from unemployment in the short term and then I’ve got an idea to start a newsblog (to be called Water Street Journal, stay tuned) and freelance while I look for a job.

The move itself should be pretty exciting. I haven’t had the chance to drive across the prairies before, so that should be interesting. Plus at the end of this trip it will leave only one province/territory – Yukon – that I haven’t been to.

I’m hoping to be able to post some sort of video journal every night of the trip, updating our progress and maybe showing a few pics and vids from that day’s travel.

Our first stop tomorrow night is Jasper, AB. It’s actually somewhat in the opposite direction, but we both love it there. Then Saturday we’ll be able to drive through Banff and Lake Louise. Neither of us have ever been, so it’ll be nice to see before we head out east.

HD-licious!

Just picked up the Olympus E-P1 for a walking-around camera and so far I’m very impressed with it. Here’s some footage I cut together from last night at Lagoon Beach.

More wedding picks

Some more picks from Saturday’s wedding shoot. I’ve only gone through and edited about half of them so far, but from that half these are the ones I like.

It’s wedding season!

It’s wedding season again and yesterday I shot my first wedding of the year. My subjects were the very friendly Lance & Nanette Crook.

How it ran…

Here’s our two-page Track & Field spread as it will run in tomorrow’s Hub.

Territorial Track Championships

Some photos from last week’s NWT Track & Field Championships. Enjoy!

Now 1000% Closr!

Been wanting to try out this Closr.it thing for a while on the blog.

There’s usually dogs tied up outside the bakery, which is downstairs from our office. Every once in a while I’ll stop to take their portrait. Maybe some day I’ll make a “Bakery Dogs” book.

Make it full screen for the best effect, though I think it works better with horizontals than verticals.

And last, but not least, a picture of Leanne.

Neat time lapse video

Saw this cool video a few days ago on TBT. Thought I would share.

Hay River Breakup 2009

Every spring when ice in the Hay River breaks up, it causes flooding to some extent in the “Old Town” part of the town of Hay River, NT. This year’s flooding wasn’t quite as bad as was expected, but was still pretty extensive.
