Teskey
My co-reporter, Patrick Teskey, needed me to do some portraits of him for his university’s magazine – they’re doing an feature on grads in the media.
We took a photo in front of the town inukshuk just as the sun was setting, so the light looked really nice. However, when we sent them the photo they said ‘great light, but we want you to reshoot it so that the inukshuk is smaller in the frame and he’s bigger. Go figure. The second shot, while still good, didn’t have the same light as this one did.

Teskey’s also a volunteer firefighter now, so the magazine was also interested in a shot to do with that. We were taking some shots of him standing on the side of the pumper truck in the garage. The problem was that it looked like it was in the garage, so they weren’t all that exciting. Eventually, I started doing to old pop-and-drag with flash/one-tenth exposure to put some artificial motion and action in it (and make the garage part less noticeable).
